It’s easy to focus solely on our beloved pups’ nutrition and physical health, but enrichment is just as crucial for their overall well-being.
Presenting your dog with physical and mental challenges helps engage his rational brain by keeping ‘logic’ – rather than emotions – at the forefront.
This reduces stress, anxiety, boredom, and frustration, resulting in a calmer dog with less potential for behavioral issues like excessive barking, destructive chewing, anxiety, aggression, or hyperactivity.
That’s why enrichment toys are a key part of any pup parent’s toolbox.
What Is Enrichment?
Enrichment allows animals to engage in their natural behaviors while adding more variety to their day.
It also gives them more choice over what they do and when they do it, so they have more control over their environment.
This is extremely empowering.
Not only is it key to boosting confidence, it can also act as a buffer for negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, and stress.
What Do I Need To Consider When Choosing Enrichment Toys For My Dog?
When choosing the best enrichment toys and dog puzzles, it’s essential to consider the type of toy and the materials used.
Some toys are designed to be chewed on, while others are more interactive or require problem-solving skills.
It’s important to choose toys that are appropriate for your dog’s size, age, individual preferences, and chewing habits.
Toys made with non-toxic materials are also essential to ensure your dog’s safety.
Always supervise your dog when he’s interacting with toys and be sure to give him plenty of enrichment opportunities throughout the day!
The more your dog’s brain is engaged, the less emotionally reactive he will be so you’ll have a calmer, more relaxed dog. What’s not to love!
Let’s now look at my 30 best dog toys that I’ve found to be a great way to provide enrichment. I’ve broken them down into categories to make it easier.
Each dog is an individual and will have his own preferences for the types of toys he interacts with and activities he engages in.
Food Puzzle Toys For Dogs
#1. KONG Classic Dog Toy
The KONG Classic Dog Toy is a must-have for any pup parent.
It’s one of the original food puzzles and its unique shape means it bounces erratically, mimicking prey movements. This makes it fun for dogs to chase around.
The hollow center is also perfect for stuffing treats, which can challenge your pup mentally and physically as he works to extract them.
I like to leave my dogs with frozen KONGs when I leave the house so they don’t get stressed or anxious about me leaving. This way, they barely even notice!
If your dog struggles with separation anxiety, this is worth having in your toolbox.
Benefits
- Made of durable natural rubber that can withstand tough chewers
- Good investment
- Can be loaded with cream cheese or peanut butter* and left in the freezer overnight to give your dog an even bigger challenge
*NB: Make sure peanut butter doesn’t contain xylitol, which is toxic for dogs
Keep In Mind
- May be too difficult for some dogs to get treats out of the center
- Can get messy and be awkward to clean, but does well in the dishwasher
- Can be a bit noisy on hard floors when your dog is playing with it
#2. Buster Cube Feeder
The Kruuse Buster Cube is a great toy for pet owners who want to keep their furry friend mentally stimulated and occupied for a long time.
Just fill it up with your dog’s favorite treats to keep him busy and engaged.
I used to give our pitbull-Labrador cross Maggie a Buster Cube at bedtime because most food puzzles were just too easy for her.
This one, however, presented her with a challenge and turned out to one of the best dog puzzle toys we could find for our clever pup.
If you’re one of those owners who needs to provide a range of indestructible dog toys, this one’s definitely worth adding to the list.

A Note On How To Play “Fetch” Safely
I’m going to jump in here to make the important point that repetitive exercise that involves stopping and starting can be tough on a dog’s joints.
“Chasing a ball [or stick] combines sharp acceleration, high speeds, rapid and uncontrolled deceleration that includes rotatory forces on fundamentally unstable joints,” says Canine Arthritis Management (CAM).
This means that when throwing a ball for your dog, it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure his safety and prevent injuries:
- Never throw a ball for a dog who is injured or has arthritis.
- Make sure your dog is warmed up before throwing the ball.
- Don’t overdo it – keep throwing games short.
- Avoid throwing balls indoors, particularly on slippery floors, as this can cause your dog to slip and injure himself.
- Avoid throwing balls on wet surfaces or unstable surfaces such as gravel, as this can also cause your dog to slip or lose his footing.
- When throwing the ball, make sure to throw it straight and low down, rather than throwing it downhill.
- Where possible, throw the ball towards a hedge or some other object so the dog will naturally start to slow down before he gets too close. This will avoid a sudden stop which can be jarring on the joints.
If you keep these precautions in mind, you can help your dog stay safe while enjoying a game of fetch.
#28. ChuckIt! Classic Ball Launcher
The ChuckIt! Classic Ball Launcher is always a popular choice with dog owners who like it as a way to provide their dogs with physical exercise.
It functions like an extension of your arm and with practice, it’s possible to throw a ball as far as about 140 feet, tiring out even the most fetch-happy retriever.
Plus, the smart design of Chuckit! means you’ll never have to pick up a soggy wet tennis ball ever again.
Benefits
- The 26-inch launcher helps you throw the ball further
- Allows for more comfortable pick-up by reducing the need to bend over
Keep In Mind
- The ball that comes with the launcher may need to be replaced with a more durable ball
- May take some practice to get the hang of throwing the ball with the launcher
- Some dogs may not be interested in playing “fetch”
#29. ChuckIt! Ultra Ball
The ChuckIt! Ultra Ball has a high bounce and durable design that make it perfect for outdoor play.
The bright colors make it easy to find and it tends to hold up well – even after extended use.

Benefits
- The ultra-bounce ball design makes it perfect for playing fetch with your dog, even in water
- Textured surface and thick rubber core make it durable yet soft on dog’s mouths
- Bright orange and blue design stands out in tall grass or water, making it easier to spot and retrieve
Keep In Mind
- May be too heavy for some dogs who may prefer tennis balls
- May become dirty and require cleaning after use
#30. ChuckIt! Paraflight Flyer Dog Frisbee Toy
The ChuckIt! Paraflight Flyer is another handy way for your dog to engage in physical activity through playing long-distance games of “fetch.”
Plus, the bright orange and blue colors make it easy to spot in any terrain.
I have used the ChuckIt! Paraflight Flyer with my own dogs and it’s been a great addition to our outdoor playtime.
The gradual descent makes it easy for my pups to catch mid-flight, and the buoyant design means we can play with it in the local lake or at the beach.
The durable construction has held up well, but I would caution against using it with strong chewers who may damage the frisbee.
Benefits
- Gradual descent for easy catching
- Durable multi-layer nylon construction with soft rubber edges
Keep In Mind
- May not be suitable for strong chewers
- May not function as well in windy weather
Before You Go
- It’s important to note that no toy is indestructible, so always supervise your dog when playing with toys and inspect the toys regularly for damage.
- Make sure your dog does not swallow or ingest any parts of the toy, including small fragments or fibers, and discard toys immediately if the edges become sharp or frayed.
- It’s essential for dog owners to be aware of the potential choking hazard and risk of intestinal blockage.
- If you suspect your dog has eaten or accidentally swallowed any small fragment or part of the toy, check with your veterinarian just to be safe.
- As such, choose an appropriate size toy for your dog to ensure his safety and minimize the risk of choking.
- Finally, make sure to always have plenty of fresh water available for your furry friend during playtime.
By following these simple guidelines, you and your pup can enjoy hours of safe fun playing with a variety of enriching toys!
