How to Keep a Multi-Cat Home Clean Without Losing Your Sanity

Living with multiple cats can be entertaining to say the least, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean and fresh. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to maintain a tidy living space when you’re sharing it with several furry felines. At one point, we had as many as 10 cats under our roof. While I wouldn’t trade the love and companionship they provide for anything, I quickly learned that I needed to develop a solid cleaning routine to keep our home from turning into a chaotic mess. Here’s how I did it.

Establish Consistent Cleaning Routines

I found it’s not enough to clean only when you notice a mess or odor; you need to be proactive and tackle the cleaning tasks on a regular basis to keep your home in tip-top shape.

Dust, Vacuum, and Mop Regularly

If you can dust, vacuum, and mop at least once a week (and maybe more, if needed), it can help prevent the accumulation of cat hair, dander, and litter, which can quickly take over your living space if left unchecked.

Investing in a high-quality pet vacuum with a HEPA filter can be a game-changer. These vacuums are specifically designed to tackle the challenges of pet hair and dander, and the HEPA filter helps trap allergens and keep the air in your home clean and healthy.

Invest in a SpotBot for Tough Stains

Accidents happen, especially when you have multiple cats. That’s why I invested in a SpotBot, a compact cleaning machine that’s specifically designed to tackle tough stains. When our cat rescue Loulou developed oxalate crystals in her bladder, she began to associate the litter box with pain and stopped using it. Even after treatment, we had to gently encourage her back, since the box carried a negative association. Another essential tool in my odor and allergen-fighting arsenal is a high-quality air purifier with a HEPA filter. These devices work wonders when it comes to removing pet dander, dust mites, and other allergens from the air, creating a healthier living environment for both you and your cats. When shopping for an air purifier, look for one with a true HEPA filter and a high CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Create Designated Zones for Litter, Food, and Water

In a multi-cat home, organization is key. Setting up specific zones for litter boxes, food, and water helps contain messes, prevents cross-contamination, and makes it easier to manage daily cleaning.

Centralized stations for litter boxes, food, and water bowls keep everything contained and easier to maintain. For example, placing litter boxes in quiet, low-traffic areas reduces stress for your cats and keeps odors localized, while dedicated feeding stations in the kitchen and utility area, for example, help manage food spills and water splashes.

Reduce Competition and Stress with Multiple Resources

Providing multiple resources also helps minimize competition. If there aren’t enough available, conflict and stress can arise. By offering several litter boxes, feeding bowls, toys, beds, and water sources, you give each cat the freedom to access what they need without confrontation, creating a calmer, more harmonious household.

Use Mats or Trays to Contain Spills

Another game-changer for me was investing in several silicone pet mats to place under our cats’ food bowls. They are all messy eaters, and having a mat or tray to catch spilled food makes a world of difference.

I prefer using pet mats with low vertical edges to contain any liquidy messes, but you can also use regular trays if you want to keep it simple. The key is to choose something that’s easy to clean and large enough to accommodate your cats’ bowls and any potential overspill.

Litter Box Maintenance

Proper litter box maintenance helps keep your home smelling fresh and ensures that your cats have a clean and comfortable place to do their business.

Check and Scoop Litter Boxes Daily

One of the most important things you can do to keep your litter boxes in top shape is to check and scoop them daily. I make it a point to scoop out any solid waste and clumps at least once a day, if not more frequently. This helps prevent odors from building up and keeps the litter boxes inviting for the cats. Note: the rule of thumb for a multi-cat home is one box per cat, plus one extra.

Contain Litter Tracking with Mats

Another issue that comes with having multiple cats is litter tracking. It seems like no matter how hard I try, I always find little bits of litter scattered by the cat boxes. To help contain the mess, I rely on oversized litter boxes paired with a large litter mat that catches stray granules before they spread through the house. The larger box gives the cats more space to maneuver, making the whole experience more comfortable for them, while the mat helps trap any stray bits that stick to their paws.

Change Litter When Odors Persist

Even with daily scooping, there comes a time when you need to completely change out the litter in your boxes. When doing a full litter change, make sure to thoroughly clean the litter box itself with mild soap and water before refilling it with fresh litter. This helps eliminate any lingering odors and gives your cats a clean slate to work with.

Minimize Dirt and Hair Tracking

Does it ever seem like, no matter how often you clean, there’s always a trail of paw prints or a tumbleweed of cat hair rolling across the floor?

Use Doormats at Entryways

One of the easiest ways to keep dirt and hair at bay is to use doormats at all of your home’s entryways. Look for doormats with a bristly or textured surface that will help scrape dirt and debris from your cats’ paws. I also recommend opting for a larger size mat that your cats can’t easily avoid or jump over.

Provide Appealing Resting Spaces for Cats

Keeping a multi-cat home clean starts with providing plenty of appealing resting spots, including cozy beds, boxes, and vertical spaces to help contain fur and dander.

Offer Cozy Beds, Boxes, and Vertical Space

Cats love nothing more than a comfy spot to curl up and take a nap. By providing your cats with a variety of options, you can encourage them to rest and sleep in designated areas, rather than on your furniture or carpets.

Our cats are particularly fond of plush, donut-shaped beds they can sink into and feel secure. They also love a good cardboard box, especially if it’s filled with a soft blanket or towel. And don’t forget about vertical space. Cats love to climb and perch, so investing in a cat tree or wall-mounted shelves can give them a place to survey their domain while keeping your floors and furniture hair-free.

Use Furniture Covers on Favorite Spots

Of course, even with plenty of appealing resting spaces, some cats will still insist on napping on your favorite chair or sofa. That’s where furniture covers come in handy. By placing a washable cover over your cat’s favorite spots, you can protect your sofa from hair, dander, and the occasional hairball.

Look for covers that are made from durable, washable fabrics like cotton or microfiber. You’ll also want to make sure they are easy to remove and replace, so you can quickly toss them in the wash when needed.

Grooming and Fabric Maintenance

Regular grooming and smart fabric choices can also make a world of difference.

Brush Cats Regularly to Reduce Shedding

One of the most effective ways to keep cat hair under control is with regular brushing. Grooming at least once a week—or more often during shedding seasons—removes loose hair and dander before it spreads through the home, while also keeping coats healthy and shiny.

Choose Washable Fabrics for Easy Cleaning

It can also be helpful to select washable fabrics, where practical. Bedding, curtains, and furniture covers made from cotton, linen, or microfiber can all be tossed in the washing machine, making it much easier to manage fur, dander, and odors.

Some Things Just Need to Go

This may be controversial, but when you’re living with multiple cats, some things, no matter how much you love them, just need to go. Here are two things I’ve said goodbye to in order to maintain a cleaner home.

Eliminate Carpets

I know, I know – carpets are cozy and comfortable underfoot. But when you’re dealing with multiple cats, they can quickly become a magnet for hair, dander, and even cat vomit (sorry!). Hard flooring is far easier to maintain, allowing you to sweep or mop away messes instead of battling with carpet fibers.

Eliminate Plants

I used to have a lovely collection of houseplants scattered throughout my home. They added a touch of greenery and freshness to each room, and I loved caring for them. However, my cats had other ideas. They started using my plants as scratch posts and makeshift litter boxes, digging in the soil and spreading dirt everywhere. And don’t even get me started on the smell.

In the end, I had to make the difficult decision to rehome my plants and embrace a greenery-free existence. It was a sad day, but it was necessary for the sake of my home and my sanity.
