Winter has turned our backyard into a picturesque snow-covered wonderland, but it’s also created a problem: despite our best efforts with the snow shovel, the snow has piled up so high that our adventurous rescue dog, Roman, can now effortlessly step over the fence whenever he catches the scent of a deer in the nearby forest.

With Roman’s newfound freedom and our growing concerns, it’s been the perfect time to put the Tractive DOG 6 GPS & Health Tracker* to the test. Could this high-tech gadget help us keep tabs on our intrepid explorer and make sure he stays safe?

• Live Tracking: Get real-time location updates with just a tap in the app. Keep in mind that GPS accuracy may be affected if the tracker doesn’t have a clear view of the sky (e.g., near dense trees or inside buildings).
• Location History: Review your dog’s previous walks and discover his favorite spots.
• Virtual Fences: Set up custom safe zones (like your home or yard) and no-go zones to get instant alerts if your dog leaves or enters these areas.

The Tractive DOG 6 tracker also boasts an updated design and a number of enhanced features:

Unboxing and Set-up

The tracker comes in a compact, well-packaged box complete with USB charging cable and clear instructions. Setup was straightforward, but there were a few steps to go through.

Installing the App

First, I turned on the tracker and downloaded the app via the QR code provided. I installed it on my phone and created an account. You can sign up with an email and password or use Google for quicker access. The app then prompted me to allow location permissions (which need to be on at all times) and enable Bluetooth to sync activity data.

Once those settings were in place, the app searched for nearby devices. When it found the tracker, I entered the 8-character tracker ID located on the back of the device. After selecting my home country, I had the option to choose between an easy or advanced activation process—I opted for easy.

Charging the Tracker

Charging the tracker was simple—it started charging as soon as I plugged it in. It took about 30 minutes to reach a full charge.

Pet Profile

Meanwhile, I entered Roman’s details on the app. This included his name, breed, age (though scrolling back to 2017 was a bit long-winded – perhaps there’s an easier way?), weight, and height. I especially liked that I could add multiple photos of Roman to personalize his profile. You can even add in your pet’s microchip number and link to your Instagram for easy milestone sharing.

Setting the Virtual Fence

Profile completed, a map popped up where I could set our home location by positioning a marker. I also set up a Power Saving Zone using our home Wi-Fi, which helps extend battery life.

The app offers customization options like setting virtual fences (I experimented with the circular and rectangular shapes before settling on a hexagonal one that was easier to adjust) and no-go zones, adjusting bark monitoring alerts, tracking wellness data, and even linking the Strava app for activity tracking.

There are two tracking modes:

• Default Mode, which sends updates every 2-10 minutes to conserve battery.
• Live Mode, which provides real-time tracking but uses more power. Live Mode automatically turns off after five minutes, but you can extend the duration in the app if needed.

Friends and Family

After I’d done all that, the tracker needed a quick software update, which took about five minutes. While waiting, I explored the app’s quick guide. It was actually pretty handy, explaining the meanings of the different light indicators and how to check the tracker’s status. You can also invite family members to access tracking data via WhatsApp, Messenger, or email, and change measurements to your preferred denomination in the settings.

Attaching the Tracker to the Dog’s Collar

Once everything was ready, I attached the tracker to Roman’s collar (there’s a built in attachment clip on the back of the tracker). It’s incredibly lightweight, and he didn’t seem to notice it at all.

The entire set-up process took about 30 minutes. The instructions have been well thought out and are easy to follow.

My Experience After a Week of Use

Virtual Fences and Safe Zones

Setting up a precise home boundary took a little trial and error since our yard backs onto dense forest. Initially, I found it tricky to create a precise boundary around our perimeter fence, but the hexagonal option helped me shape it accurately. Note that the tracker’s GPS positioning can be less precise near dense trees or indoors. Also, smaller virtual fences can sometimes result in inaccurate readings. If this occurs, the manufacturer advises setting up a slightly larger safe zone around your fenced area to reduce the chance to reduce false alerts.

Real-Time Alerts

Thanks to the snow banks currently covering our yard, we had the perfect opportunity to test the tracker right away. On the first night Roman was wearing it, he once again indulged in his new trick of stepping over the fence, thus leaving the safe zone that we had preset. It was dark, and despite keeping a close eye on him, we still managed to lose sight of him.

I immediately received an alert on my phone notifying me that he was outside his safe zone,  showing me his exact location as he headed off into the forest. Like the good boy he is, Roman came back when we called him. But if he hadn’t, we would’ve known exactly where to find him as we were able to track him on the app map. As soon as he reached our side gate, I received another alert confirming he was back in his safe zone.

Activity History

I really liked how lightweight yet sturdy the device was. It was easy to attach to Roman’s collar, he wore it comfortably, and it never seemed to bother him. It also stood up to the brutal Scandinavian winter weather and some fairly vigorous play with our other rescue dogs, Lennox and Esme.

All you have to do is remember to press the “walk” icon each time you leave for your walk (and to press “end” once you get home) and it will track your entire route. I soon got into the habit of checking the app every day to see how far we had walked, the duration, and the number of calories Roman had burned. The location history feature was helpful, allowing me to look back at our past routes and favorite spots.

Activity Levels

A feature I found particularly interesting was the ability to compare Roman’s activity levels with other dogs, both locally and internationally. Seeing his name rising up the activity charts was surprisingly motivating! The app also provides badges for reaching milestones or meeting targets that you can share with family or on social media—it’s a fun little touch and a lovely touch of positive reinforcement.

Wellness Score

After seven days, we received a Wellness Score, which provided a comprehensive overview of Roman’s activity, sleep, and barking patterns. The app allows you to set activity goals and provides a daily breakdown of whether those targets are met.

After the first week, Roman’s Wellness Score was 77 – good in terms of activity and barking, but only OK in sleep. He sleeps all night and has several naps during the day too, so I think this will gradually increase over time as the app gathers more data.

It’s important to note that the health alert features of the tracker do require more time to gather data. The manufacturer recommends the following for comprehensive insights:

• Sleep Monitoring: Wear the tracker overnight for at least six weeks.
• Activity Alerts: Wear the tracker for 12+ hours a day for six weeks.
• Long-Term Activity Alerts: Wear the tracker for 12+ hours a day for at least six months.

Since we’re still in the early stages, I’m curious to see how Roman’s data evolves over time.

Data Sharing

One of my favorite features was how easy it was to share tracking data with family members. By sending a simple link, they can also download the app and track Roman’s movements. This feature was particularly useful when my husband walked Roman instead of me, ensuring no interruption in our data collection.

Battery Life

After seven days of continuous use, the battery still had 32% left. Roman spent about 22 hours a day in his Power Saving Zone, so battery consumption was minimal. However, I’d recommend keeping it charged regularly—just in case your dog ever gets lost or goes missing, you want the battery to be at full capacity. When I finally charged the tracker after the first week, it took just 30 minutes to reach a full charge.

Second Device

Another appealing aspect of the Tractive DOG 6 Tracker is the option to get a second tracking device for another pet at no additional cost (subscription fees still apply). This is a great deal for multi-pet households. You can then add your second pet to your app and track both of them at the same time.

New Health Monitoring Features

Since we first got Roman his tracker, Tractive has rolled out even more advanced health monitoring. The latest update now includes heart rate and respiratory rate tracking — something I didn’t have when I first started testing, but that I’m really excited about.

These features are completely non-invasive, and after about a week of wear, the app sets a personal baseline for your dog. From then on, it not only flags if the readings are above or below normal, but also shows me Roman’s average resting heart rate and his average respiratory rate. Having those numbers at a glance makes it much easier to spot changes over time.

An increased heart rate can be an early sign of stress, fever, dehydration, or heart issues, while changes in breathing may point to illness, pain, or cardiac problems. The app also sends Health Alerts if it notices subtle shifts in activity, sleep, or these new vitals, giving you the chance to act quickly.
